Jewish History : Post Biblical Jewish History
Second Temple Era
The rebuilding of the second Temple represented an attempt at reconciliation and reconstruction. But, it was not complete and everlasting. About a century into this period the Jews enjoyed one more respite from their woes, with the events that gave us Chanukah. This grace period was, alas, short lived. The Hasmonean dynasty of priests, degenerated and lead to the reign of terror of King Herod and the ultimate Roman takeover of Israel. This course will survey the incredible changes that occurred within the period of Jewish history that revolves around the second Temple. Colorful figures such as Ezra, Shimon HaTzadik, and the Maccabbees, together with Persian, Greek and Roman domination make this one of the most fascinating periods of our history.

Rabbinic Period
The destruction of the second Temple and the period of exile that ensued did not stifle the spirit and creativity of the Jewish people. Indeed it generated some of the most dramatic developments, particularly the creation of the Talmud. If the Biblical era highlighted the formation of the Jewish heart, the Talmudic period underscored the uniqueness of the Jewish mind. The Talmudic period, as well as the Geonic period that followed it, also highlights the departure of Jewish nationhood in Israel to a Babylonian exile existence. This course will also chronicle the formation of the two "break-away" religions, and their impact on Jewish life.
- Talmudic era I: Tana’im
- Talmudic Era II: Amora’im
- Geonic Period
